Emily Porter
My work is a tactile exploration of identity, power, and resistance. Through the acts of collecting, cutting, pasting, and arranging magazine images, I engage in an intimate and transformative process. Each collage serves as a reclamation—a recontextualization of media imagery that has historically attempted to define and confine sexuality, femininity, and societal power dynamics.
By selecting and dissecting these images, I confront dominant cultural narratives that prescribe who we are allowed to be. I’m especially drawn to representations of sexuality, body politics, and gender—framing and reframing them to expose the contradictions, judgments, and desires that shape our social landscape. In slicing and reconstructing these forms, I reclaim them—sometimes violently, sometimes tenderly—as an assertion of autonomy and resistance.
This practice allows me to process anger, particularly in response to the restrictive expectations imposed by male-dominated power structures. It is a means of turning frustration into form, rage into reclamation.
At its core, my work centers the power of women—unapologetic, visceral, and unfiltered. Each collage becomes a fragmented story, a record of personal and collective empowerment that resists the gaze and invites viewers to confront their own perceptions of sexuality, identity, and agency.
Ultimately, these works exist as a rebellion—against a society that insists on telling us who we should be, and a declaration of who we are becoming.
